Garlic Planting Guidelines
Planting time in zone 4-5
(NH): Fall-October
Place: Partial to full sun and a good rich soil
- Approx. a week before planting-Separate
the cloves from your garlic bulbs into a cardboard box or paper bag to
determine how much space you will need and how many you will be
planting.
Some cloves may loose some of their peeling and these you can save to eat.
- Raise your rows up a bit and dig
trenches about 3-4" deep, then add good compost into them.
- Plant each clove about 6" apart
with pointed end up and cover over with 2 inches of soil.
- Before the ground freezes cover your
beds with about 2-4" of mulch like leaves, or hay, to protect them
from freezing too much.
- In the early spring rake the mulch off
your beds so the garlic can get warmth and sun. You may see early shoots
coming up at this time.
Cut off tall center stem if you have planted this type in June. These
tops are great in cooking.
Harvest time-end of
July- tops will be starting to change from green to brown Pull up on a dry day and let the garlic
air/sun dry for the afternoon, then bring in to store when dry. Do not to let
them get rained on or wet! Do not wash the garlic bulbs. Hang them in a cool,
dry place and store.
Then ENJOY!
