A HARDY PERENNIAL PLANT
Rhubarb plants date back to China more than 4,500 years ago, when its
root was used for medicinal purposes. It is a cool weather perennial and
grows best in early spring before the weather becomes too hot. The
leaves contain a moderately poisonous oxalic acid, but the stalks are
used in pies, jams, jellies and other desserts.
Rhubarb needs space, a dark, rich organic soil and partial to full sun
to grow well. Divide the roots in early spring every 3 to 5 years
and never harvest all the leaf stalks off a plant.
