EVENING PRIMROSE     Oenothera biennis

Field grown Evening Primrose clusters in full bloom which need to be separated, so the each of the plants have more space. They can spread by root shoots which grow near the top of the soil.

Native of North America, this plant is now widely grown all over Europe.  It grows as a circle of leaves in the first year. The second year, they grow about 2 feet tall and yellow flowers appear from a spike of  leaves. In the New England area they usually flower from late June to the end of July. They may only open fully in the evening and on cloudy days, hence its name.

The plant is grown here for its beautiful decorative flowering qualities but natives have also eaten the roots claimed to have a nutty flavor, boiled or used fresh on salads. It is grown medicinally for its seed oil which is used in herbal medicine therapy for anti-inflammatory and for other pain relieving effects.
