Native of North America, this plant is now widely grown all over
Europe. It grows as a circle of leaves in the first year. The
second year, they grow about 2 feet tall and yellow flowers appear
from a spike of leaves. In the New England area they usually
flower from late June to the end of July. They may only open fully
in the evening and on cloudy days, hence its name.
The plant is grown here for its beautiful decorative flowering qualities
but natives have also eaten the roots claimed to have a nutty flavor,
boiled or used fresh on salads. It is grown medicinally for its seed oil which is used in herbal
medicine therapy for anti-inflammatory and for other pain relieving
